The November Man (2014)

The November Man (2014) -  Pierce Brosnan, Luke Bracey, Olga Kurylenko, Bill Smitrovich.

Retired CIA operative Peter Devereaux is called back into action to extract a former love from Russia.  When the operation falls apart, he uncovers something even deeper that could have global implications.

Call this movie the "Bourne" movie for the crowd that's old enough to remember Remington Steele.  Spycraft, intrigue, and digital thievery.  Deals with shady characters that might be friends one minute, enemies the next.
This movie has a child dying at the beginning, and a child endangered towards the end.  If this is a trigger for you, be forewarned.

Brosnan has always played a great spy... there's no denying that.  However I felt that the character in this film was written in an unnecessarily crude fashion.  You don't need to make someone vulgar just to fit in in the modern spy theater or differentiate him from his former British secret agent role.  It was as if they threw in a few "Fuck yous" and obscene gestures just to make sure no-one would mistake this for a network show.  It felt heavy-handed.

There are enough twists, turns, and fake-outs that I don't want to detail the plot for you.  Honestly, after a while it all became a bit boring.  The whole thing is about one guy trying to become the next Russian president, and covering up his past... it really didn't need to become that complicated.  But they made it complicated...  So complicated that after a while it was hard to follow, and motivations didn't seem to make sense.

There weren't a lot of my counts in this movie... one eyeroll at Peter's former partner for schtupping his neighbor like a rookie, and that's pretty much it.  Mason's code name was "42", so that goes on the unofficial count.

If you like the current Daniel Craig style Bond, but still wish the Russians were the enemy, then this is the movie for you.  Especially if you're a fan of Brosnan.  I gave it a three out of five stars... I liked it okay, but I'd still rather watch something with clear-cut plots when I'm chasing all over Europe.
