All Relative (2014)

All Relative (2014) NR - When Harry, played by Jonathan Sadowski (Live Free or Die Hard), meets Grace, played by Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left (2009)) at a bowling alley, he's positive he hasn't got a shot.  He hooks up with Maren (Connie Nielsen, Devil's Advocate), an older woman who encourages him to text Grace and ask her out.  When Grace takes Harry up to her parents' house for the weekend to meet her dad before he interviews at dad's architectural firm, a surprising twist might ruin the whole thing.

That is really hard to synopsize without sounding like a fool or giving away any surprises.  Honestly, it's not much of a surprise, as you can see it coming from a mile away, but I'll do what I can.
I got the feeling that this movie was trying to really delve into the human heart, be serious yet light-hearted and funny, and have an element of romance.  I really felt it failed at all of those things.  For one thing, we are partially talking about a mature couple who has cheated on each other... while I agree that marriage is work and that relationships sometimes falter, that is something that is very hard to recover from.  And no matter how long the marriage has gone on, the cheating happened very recently... too recently for it to have been processed and dealt with in one day.  So that pretty much sucked any romance out of the parents' half of the equation.

When we get to Harry and Grace's relationship, I just can't get past the "ick" factor.  It's gross... it's really, really gross.  For Grace to end up getting past that without any discussion of the ick factor... well, that's total bullshit.  I don't know any woman with a healthy amount of self-respect who would even consider getting back together with a guy who had done that.

Harry is no Joey Tribbiani.  He's not some lovable scamp you expect this from and write it off.

All in all, this movie was good for a background noise filler while crafting.  I laughed five times, but got bored once enough to leave the room, and rolled my eyes once.  It tried to hit those rom-com/drama notes, but really it just fell flat.  I gave it a generous three out of five stars.  I didn't hate it, I just don't see myself ever watching it again... not even on Netflix.
