Homefront (2013)

Homefront (2013) R - A self-retired DEA undercover agent named Broker (Jason Statham, The Transporter) moves up to his recently-deceased wife's home town in search of a quiet life for him and his daughter.  But when he's drawn to the attention of a local meth manufacturer, his idyllic life starts to get complicated.

Not quite your typical "rednecks mess with the wrong new guy in town" flick, Homefront is about making choices, escalating a problem when you don't need to, and defense of home and family.
James Franco (The Interview) plays the swamp-rat meth manufacturer to perfection, Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice) is very believable as his tweaker groupie, and a minor but relevant role for Clancy Brown (Alien Quadrilogy. and good grief that man has done a lot of Spongebob Squarepants voice work) as the small town sheriff who can't look away when real trouble comes to town.

Lots of interesting hand-to-hand combat, some urban defense, a few explosions and chase scenes.  If you like Statham's other work, you'll like this too.

One eyeroll in this movie, right at the beginning, during the takedown that leads to Broker's retirement, as it was a bit cliche.  A few needle drops for the fight sequences, but otherwise it's a straight-up action flick that you can tune in and out if you so desire.

I'll give it four and a half out of five stars, a bit shaved off for some worn stereotypes, and a general feeling of dealing with Meth-heads yet again being just a bit annoying.  I realize it's a real problem in this country, but ever since Breaking Bad hit the scene, it's the only drug anyone's aware of anymore.  At the low price-point of under $10 on Amazon, I'd totally recommend it for your collection if you're a Statham or action fan.
