Grabbers (2012)

Grabbers (2012) NR - A small Irish island is besieged when an alien crashes in the waters off the coast.  It's allergic to alcohol, so their solution?  A lock-in at the pub!

In Ireland's answer to Tremors, Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia) is alcoholic Garda CiarĂ¡n O'Shay, temporarily in charge in his tiny hamlet while his boss is on holiday.  Enter temp Garda Lisa Nolan, played by Ruth Bradley (Flyboys).  She's all work, no play, and no-nonsense.  When a local lobsterman finds an unusual creature in one of his traps, they have to find a way to work together and get along.

I want to say this is a cute little monster movie, but wow... there is nothing cute about this monster. Or the scores of drunk people.  When they find out that a
.2 blood alcohol level in a victim can kill the creature, everyone gets loaded at a level that only the Irish can accomplish.  In a crisis, I'm sure you can imagine the result.

Since this is a UK production, their acceptable swear words are little different than ours.  If you have impressionable youngsters who like to repeat new words over and over and over in public, you might want to keep them away from the repeated us of "feck" and the word it sometimes replaces, and the c-word in the ending on this one.  Otherwise it's an acceptable monster flick with heavy accents... probably want the subtitles on for this one if you're not used to them.

It's billed as part comedy, part horror.  I laughed out loud four times during this film, mostly at clever lines.  One needle drop at the end during the monster/truck chase scene.  The acting is good, the characters are well done, and the story has the appropriate depth for a film of this genre.

Overall I'd give this a four out of five stars.  If you enjoyed Tremors, you'll probably like this movie.
