The Phoenix Project (2015) NR

Corey Rieger (Out of the Furnace), Andrew Simpson (Heathens and Thieves), David Pesta (Creed), Orson Ossman (Life Inside Out)

Four young scientists come together to work on a machine that could possibly re-animate the dead.

Easily a metaphor for the low-budget independent film that it is,  this film had its good points and bad points.  If you go into this expecting science fiction, heavy on the science, then you're going to be disappointed.  This is four guys living together in a house for a summer with a limited amount of money and varying degrees of professionalism.

Let's get this right out front... the acting is superb.  Only one character performance was slightly weak, and that was the least experienced actor in the bunch (Pesta).  Considering what they had to work with, this was amazing acting.

And what they had to work with was a very plodding, slow-paced script.  Some of the conflict felt slightly contrived, and even the moments of emotional tension seemed to drag.  Motivations weren't clear for everyone, and what was with all the late-night insomnia?

As a knitter's movie, this was okay.  Slow and plodding can be a crafter's friend... to a point.  I have to admit I nearly nodded off near the middle... it wasn't until a successful test that things began hopping.  Sorry... you'll get the pun later.

Not a lot of counts for this movie.  One needle-dropping moment when it was discovered there really wasn't a grant funding the project and emotions started running high.  One holy crap moment (which was really more of a "aww... cute" moment) with the rabbit.  At least the science sounded real enough that it didn't earn any eye-rolls.

As something new to watch, this works.  I gave it a four out of five stars, mostly losing one star for the pacing and the sometimes weak story.  If you like human drama, you'll like this movie... although the ending might leave you slightly depressed.  If you want flashy science-fiction, give this a pass.
