The Mirror (2014) NR

Jemma Dallender (I Spit On Your Grave 2), Joshua Dickinson (Holby City), Nate Fallows (Viking Quest)

Three flatmates buy a purportedly haunted mirror on eBay with the goal of proving the existence of the paranormal for a million dollar cash prize.

With the way I loathe the "found footage" style of filmmaking, it's astounding how often I end up watching the things.  They're terrible for my vertigo, and they seem to be an excuse for badly planned camera angles and crappy sound.  That being said, this movie's "shakiness factor" is not as bad as most.  Unfortunately that is the only positive thing I can say about this film.

They should have gone with the "ghost in a jar" instead.

Upon the night of receipt of the mirror's shipment, it's discovered that Matthew (Dickinson) has a history of sleepwalking.  They discover him the next morning sleeping on a balcony with no memory of how he got there.  The rest is all blurry or darkened footage of people getting up in the middle of the night, messing with cutlery, and basically bickering with each other.

Imagine a blend of The Blair Witch Project, and Paranormal Activity, but made by film students who blew off their studies to go down to the pub, and you're getting close to what this movie is like.

It's the worst thing I can say about a film... it's bland.  It's long stretches of boredom, and it takes an hour (!) to get to anything even remotely interesting.  Then it becomes cliche.

And quite frankly, I would have chucked that mirror off the high balcony on the second day.  Apparently it wouldn't have done any good, but at least they would have known shit was getting serious a lot sooner.

One laugh out loud moment that was more of a chuckle, and to be honest I don't even remember what it was.  One holy crap moment that was equally forgettable (probably when we see Matt in front of the mirror with the knife for the last time) and two eye roll moments in the last twelve minutes, for the cliche predictable ending and the "police found this footage..." placard at the end.

If you want to spend an hour and a half in a brick and white flat filled with Ikea products watching students get pissy with each other, then watch this film.  If you're looking for scares, watch Ghost Hunters on TV or something.
