Bad Hair Day (2015) TV-G

Laura Marano (Superbad), Leigh-Allyn Baker (Little Savages)

Disgraced cop Liz Morgan (Baker) and desperate-to-be-prom-queen senior Monica (Marano) discover they have to work together to foil the plans of a sneering jewel thief on prom night.

A very Disney TV movie, this is the kind of wholesome, cutesy film I'm in the mood for every once in a while.  After yesterday's Battle Royale, I needed a palate cleanser.

While the story of how this enormous, extremely expensive pink diamond valued for millions of dollars made its way into the hands of a precocious 16 year old girl is hard to believe, there's no doubt that the snarky pair of protagonists make for a fun romp through this movie.  And they're both having a really bad hair day.

This movie was really cute, in its own way.  Monica gets a mother figure in her life, and Liz learns how to soften up a bit and interact with people a little more, all while trying to solve crime and tackle a teenage milestone.  One disaster after another keeps stopping them short of their goals, and it's done in a deliciously sarcastic and funny manner.  Think "Freaky Friday" without the body switching and that's about the level of humor and quality of this film, although it's hard to live up to Jamie Lee Curtis shredding guitar.

As a knitter's background entertainment, it's not bad... however, you will be distracted by Monica's signature headwear throughout the film... a cute, cat-eared stocking cap in turquoise, gray, and red.  I really want to re-create that hat.

Nine laugh out loud moments, and a few needle drops during the driver's test chase scene.  I give this movie a four out of five stars.  While I get this is Disney, there's no way the police chief would approve letting a sixteen year old wear a $7 million dollar piece of evidence to her prom.  No.  And wearing a prom dress from the evidence lockup... really?  Are you saying it doesn't have some kind of weird fluids or drugs on it?  Gross.  Then again, I have been re-watching CSI: Vegas all week so maybe I need to lighten up.
