The Maze Runner (2014) PG-13

Will Poulter (We're the Millers), Dexter Darden (Joyful Noise), Aml Ameen (Kidulthood)

In a dystopian future, kids are dumped into a green glade with no memory except their name.  Surrounded by a gigantic cement and metal maze that seems to be their only way out, a small group of boys navigate its ever-changing landscape daily while avoiding the guardians that patrol it.

Studies show that the group of movie-goers with the most disposable income are teens and young adults in their early 20s.  It's a shame that more of an effort isn't made to draw in an adult crowd.  We may not have as much available disposable income, but when we do spend, we spend bigger.  I am tired of films made from teen books, populated by children, and virtually sterile of anything approaching non-political-correctness, or sex.  Just evil adults trying to keep the kids down, man.  What kind of message is that?

Part Lord of the Flies, part LOST, and part Ender's Game or Hunger Games, this was one long-ass movie that really didn't have much to say.  The effects were good, and the fight and chase sequences were well done, but the only message was that cooperation is key to survival.  That, and the people who can't handle change or the pressure of survival go bat-shit crazy.

Two laugh out loud moments, one holy crap moment, and I dropped the knitting needles twice for the griever chase sequences.  I give this movie a three out of five stars.  For crafters, if you need to fill three hours of knitting time, this will get the job done nicely.  Don't expect a deep message, and be prepared for an ending that's semi-unresolved.  It is part of a trilogy, after all.
