Let's Be Cops (2014)

James D'Arcy (Screwed), Jake Johnson (Safety Not Guaranteed), Damon Wayans Jr. (Dance Flick)

Two struggling best friends in L.A. wear cop outfits to an out-of-season costume party and get mistaken for real police officers.  They're having fun with it until bad guys start messing with their neighborhood, and it becomes an all-out war where they may have to put their lives on the line.

With a second-generation Wayans and the doofy guy from New Girl, I expected this to be slightly funny, really crude, with very little redeemable value.  I was pleasantly surprised.
While I found the drug humor inappropriate at times, this was actually an excellent humorous action flick with some really nice comments about friendship and finding your dream.

And you can't avoid the inevitable message that cops have a dirty, horrible, dangerous job that they are seriously underpaid for.  Just dealing with the naked tweakers in the department store would be enough to make anyone throw in the towel.

There is some graphic (really gross) male nudity.  There's also some sleazy female behavior that's not only cringe-worthy, but goes on for way longer than is still funny.

However, I did laugh my ass off.  Twelve laugh out loud moments, and three holy crap moments... mostly from physical comedy that gets really rough.

I would not watch this with kids if you're trying to reinforce the "Just say no" policy.  Drug use is talked about far too casually, done too casually, and I'm not just talking about marijuana... there is also crystal meth use, and there's nothing that should be funny about that.

Otherwise this was a hilarious buddy not-cops film.  If the drug use had been treated with a bit more seriousness, and Johnson's love "interest" a little less desperate and weird, it might have gotten a perfect score.  As it is, I give it a four out of five stars... and I'd watch a sequel.
