The Family (2013) R

Robert DeNiro (Stone), Michelle Pfeiffer (The Witches of Eastwick), Tommy Lee Jones (Volcano)

They're on the run from the mob and landed in Normandy.  This just goes to show that life in the witness protection program is not without its problems.  There are gossipy locals, weird food, and brown water coming from
the tap.  Can they keep their cool and blend in?

It doesn't matter where or how far you move, the same behavior will bring you the same problems wherever you go.  DeNiro's performance as a former mob guy turned State's evidence, Michelle Pfeiffer as a mob wife, Tommy Lee Jones as the agent tasked with keeping them safe in the program... these were never in question, as they have been proven before.  The real surprise was the children, who showed an impressive maturity in their roles.  Dianna Agron (Glee) as Belle Blake and John D'Leo (Unbroken) as Warren Blake made sure we knew the reality of their larcenous, aggressive natures.

I enjoyed this film, even though a great part of it was depressing.  Some of their motivations were inexplicable.  DeNiro, I got... he wanted certain things for himself and his family, and he only knew one way to get them.  Pfeiffer I got... she loved being social, being a hostess, and now she's being carted from one foreign village to another, needing to be low-profile and blend in, and all she's got are the two guys sitting with binoculars across the street.  But why are these kids coming in with the intention of stirring things up on their first day in a new school?  That I don't get.

There were three laugh out loud moments and one needle-dropping moment during this film.  As a film for crafting it's pretty good... the big action is near the end, and the personal drama leading up to that is engaging and interesting.  I gave it a four out of five stars, and I probably would have scored it better if it hadn't been so bleak.  If you watched "Lilyhammer" and liked it, you'd probably love this film.
